Now in its third edition, this is a classic books
on back office operations for the US securities industry.
If you are a United States based
operations professional who is primarily interested in exchange traded securities, you
will probably have a copy of Weiss. It is used by many financial institutions to train
new operations employees. It has lots of worked examples and "how-to"
information. The "meat" of the book covers: purchase & sales, margin,
cashiering, accounting, stock record, dividends, proxy, etc. These topics are covered
twice, once in an Overview section and then again in a Procedures
section. Other sections cover underwriting, OTC markets, exchanges, the bank-brokerage
firm relationship, etc. Anticipating that many readers will be new to finance, there is
also extensive information on a variety of traded instruments such as: equities,
commercial paper, asset-backeds, foreign exchange, options, mutual funds, etc. While the
focus is US securities, there is a discussion of swaps and a brief chapter
on international settlement covering major markets, Cedel, Euroclear and international
bond interest calculations. [Review based on the earlier second edition.]
